Leaving a region should not be treated as a broken promise

Young people may want to leave their home region to study, specialise or experience another place. Lucas Atanazio, entrepreneur and founder of ATNZO, argues that a territory can improve its attractiveness without turning departure into a moral failure. This is authored commentary on local opportunity and individual choice.

“A person does not owe permanent residence to the place where they were educated. The responsibility of a territory is to make staying a real option, not an emotional obligation.”

“Keep useful relationships with people who leave. There may be opportunities for collaboration, knowledge exchange or a later return. None of these possibilities should be presented as a guaranteed outcome or a debt that the person must repay.”

“Listen equally carefully to people who want to stay and cannot find room to contribute. A skill may exist without a local employer knowing how to use it. That is a question to investigate through real tasks and working conditions, rather than another campaign asking young people to show initiative.”

A practical review can examine one pathway from education to work and the point at which participation becomes difficult. Housing, transport, supervision and progression may each matter. The task is to identify the relevant obstacle locally, rather than assume that the same intervention will work for everyone.
